Economic strain and Cultural Revolution-era politics led to its cancellation on May 13, 1972, without a single crewed or uncrewed test flight.

Heavy-lift rocket

China's most capable operational rocket family. The 5B variant launched all three Tiangong modules; the standard 5 launched Chang'e 5, Chang'e 6, and the Tianwen-1 Mars mission.

Long March 10

Crewed lunar rocket (in development)

Built for the crewed lunar program. Two launches per mission carry Mengzhou and Lanyue separately to lunar orbit, where they dock before descent.

Mengzhou Spacecraft

Next-generation crew vehicle

Shenzhou's planned successor. A near-Earth variant will eventually service Tiangong; a lunar variant, hardened for high-speed reentry, will carry crew to and from the Moon.

Lanyue Lunar Lander

The Organizations Behind It

Unlike NASA's contractor model, China's program runs almost entirely through two state-owned conglomerates and a civil oversight agency.

Two Programs, One Destination

A Second Moon Race?

China has stated a goal of landing astronauts on the Moon before 2030, using the Long March 10 rocket, Mengzhou spacecraft, and Lanyue lander. NASA's own Artemis III is targeting a crewed lunar south pole landing no earlier than mid-2027 -- both programs are aiming at the same general region of the Moon, and both have slipped their target dates before, so neither timeline should be read as fixed.

The two efforts also come with competing coalitions rather than a single race between two countries. The U.S.-led Artemis Accords have more than 40 signatory nations built around Outer Space Treaty principles of transparency and interoperability. China and Russia lead a parallel effort, the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), which has attracted a smaller but growing list of partner countries including Pakistan, Belarus, Egypt, South Africa, and others, with construction envisioned from the late 2020s and a permanently crewed base contemplated for the 2030s.

Beyond the Moon, China is also the only nation besides the United States and the (former Soviet Union/Russia) to have independently launched humans into orbit and to currently operate a crewed space station -- Tiangong runs in parallel to the U.S.-led International Space Station, which is expected to be retired later this decade. Whether either nation "wins" a crewed lunar landing first is ultimately a matter of engineering schedules holding -- something neither program has yet demonstrated on its stated timeline.
