Quick Facts
About AAC Space Africa
AAC Space Africa is the South African subsidiary of AAC Clyde Space (Nasdaq First North: AAC), the Swedish small satellite manufacturer and operator, established in Somerset West in the Western Cape in 2017 to build local satellite manufacturing capacity on the African continent. The facility provides satellite assembly, integration, and test (AIT) services for CubeSat-class missions, enabling African universities, research agencies, and emerging commercial operators to have their satellites integrated locally rather than shipping to Europe or the U.S. — reducing cost, improving schedule control, and building in-country technical expertise. AAC Space Africa assembles and tests AAC Clyde Space's standardized 1U-16U CubeSat platforms and subsystems including EPS (electrical power systems), OBCs, radios, and deployable solar arrays, and has worked with South African universities and the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) on student satellite programs. The Somerset West location clusters with other Western Cape technology companies and provides access to the Stellenbosch University engineering ecosystem and the nearby Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) ground station network. As more African nations develop national space programs — with Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and Ethiopia all pursuing satellite programs — AAC Space Africa is positioned to capture local integration contracts that previously went to European prime contractors. The parent company, AAC Clyde Space, operates a vertical stack from subsystem components through complete satellite platforms to constellation operations, and the South African facility extends that stack to include in-continent AIT capability that aligns with African Union space policy goals for indigenous space capacity building.
