African Space Industry Association

The African Space Industry Association (ASIA) is a Johannesburg, South Africa-based nonprofit industry body founded in 2018 to strengthen and connect the emerging commercial space sector across the African continent — serving as a pan-African industry federation that represents private space companies, facilitates business networking, advocates for enabling policy frameworks, and helps African space startups gain visibility in the global space economy.

Africa's space sector in the late 2010s was developing rapidly relative to its historical baseline: South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, and Morocco all established national space agencies or programs, and a growing number of private companies — satellite manufacturers (Dragonfly Aerospace in South Africa), data analytics startups (Astrosat, Satellogic's African operations), launch service providers, and ground station operators — were entering the ecosystem. ASIA emerged to address the coordination gap: individual national industries were developing in relative isolation, lacking a structure that could connect South African satellite manufacturers with Kenyan data platform companies, Nigerian telecommunications satellite customers with Ethiopian ground station infrastructure, or West African investors with pan-African space ventures.

Key ASIA activities include organizing the African Space Industry Conference — an annual convening that brings together startup founders, investors, government officials, and international space company representatives interested in the African market — publishing industry reports on the state of African space activity, running startup support programs connecting early-stage African space companies with mentors and investors, and lobbying for African representation in multilateral space governance forums including the UN COPUOS.

The advocacy dimension focuses on ensuring African countries develop space legislation, spectrum rights, and satellite regulatory frameworks that enable rather than constrain private sector development — a challenge in many African markets where spectrum management and satellite licensing remain fragmented across national telecommunications regulators with inconsistent policies. ASIA also advocates for African participation in the global value chain as component suppliers and data customers, not just satellite operators dependent on foreign technology.

Competitors for ASIA's convening role include national-level associations (Southern African Space Association, Nigerian Space Industry Coalition) and pan-African technology bodies that address space as part of broader technology agendas.
