Akash Systems builds satellite radio transmitters around GaN-on-diamond semiconductors, a process that places the hottest region of a gallium nitride transistor within tens of nanometres of synthetic diamond — the most thermally conductive material known. Removing heat that close to the junction lets the amplifier run harder in a smaller, lighter package, which matters because RF power amplifiers dominate the thermal and mass budget of a communications satellite.
The company was founded in 2016 by Felix Ejeckam and Ty Mitchell and is based in San Francisco, with semiconductor manufacturing in Oakland. It has demonstrated an X/S-band satellite radio transmitting 650 Mbps from a palm-sized unit, and received FCC approval to fly its GaN-on-diamond transmitter on a 12U CubeSat targeting multi-gigabit downlink rates.
Akash is backed by investors including Vinod Khosla and Peter Thiel, signed a non-binding preliminary agreement for $68 million in US CHIPS Act funding, and has extended the same diamond cooling technology to terrestrial AI servers under a $27 million contract with NxtGen.
