Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara (CLA) is Brazil's primary space launch facility, located at approximately 2.3° S latitude on Maranhão state's northern coast — one of the closest operational launch sites to the equator on Earth, providing launch efficiency advantages for GEO transfer orbit missions compared to higher-latitude sites. The center was established in 1983 and is operated by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
Alcântara's low-latitude location translates directly into launch performance: a rocket launching to geostationary transfer orbit from 2.3° S benefits from Earth's full equatorial rotational velocity (~465 m/s), reducing the propellant required to achieve the eastward velocity needed for GEO insertion compared to sites like Cape Canaveral (28.4° N), Baikonur (45.9° N), or Kourou at 5.2° N. This geography has long attracted international interest in Alcântara for commercial launches.
A catastrophic explosion on August 22, 2003 during ground testing killed 21 Brazilian technicians preparing the VLS (Veículo Lançador de Satélites) rocket — the worst disaster in Brazil's space program history. VLS development never achieved orbital flight. Brazil subsequently pursued international partnerships to utilize the site. A Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA) signed with the United States in 2019 removed the legal barrier preventing American companies from launching at Alcântara, enabling US launch providers to use the facility. South Korea's Innospace conducted its successful 2023 HANBIT-TLV suborbital test from CLA, and Brazilean private launch company Visiona and international operators have expressed commercial launch interest.
