ArianeGroup Propulsion

ArianeGroup Propulsion is the Vernon, France-based rocket engine design and manufacturing center of ArianeGroup — the 50/50 joint venture between Airbus and Safran formed in 2015 to manage the Ariane launch vehicle program — responsible for developing and producing the cryogenic liquid rocket engines and solid rocket motors that power the Ariane 5 and Ariane 6 launch vehicles.

The Vulcain 2.1 engine is ArianeGroup Propulsion's flagship liquid cryogenic engine — powering the Ariane 6 core stage (EPC, Etage Principal Cryogénique). The Vulcain 2.1 burns liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid oxygen (LOX) at a thrust of approximately 1,370 kN (vacuum) with a specific impulse of 433 seconds — representing decades of refinement from the original Vulcain that powered Ariane 5's first flight in 1996.

Vernon's facilities manufacture Vulcain engines using a combination of machined nickel superalloy turbopump components, regeneratively cooled thrust chamber assemblies, and precision nozzle extensions, with qualification testing conducted at the nearby Vernon test stand and at the Lampoldshausen DLR facility in Germany.

The Vinci upper stage engine provides re-ignitable propulsion for Ariane 6's Upper Composite Cryogenic (EPC + Etage Supérieur Cryogénique, ESC), enabling multiple restarts in orbit for deployment of satellite constellations to precise orbital altitudes — a capability that Ariane 5 lacked with its single-burn HM7B upper stage. Vinci burns LH2/LOX and is the first European cryogenic engine designed for multiple re-ignition in vacuum, delivering approximately 180 kN thrust and 457 seconds specific impulse.

ArianeGroup Propulsion also manufactures the P120C solid rocket motor — a large monolithic carbon fiber wound solid motor used as a strap-on booster for Ariane 6 (2 or 4 boosters depending on mission) and as the first stage of the Vega-C small launcher. The P120C is Europe's largest single-piece solid rocket motor, produced by Europropulsion (an ArianeGroup/Avio joint venture) at Collefereto, Italy and Vernon. Its development represents a deliberate commonality strategy between the Ariane 6 and Vega-C programs to reduce manufacturing costs through shared production.

Ariane 6's first successful orbital launch occurred in July 2024 after years of delay, marking Europe's restoration of autonomous launch access following the Ariane 5 retirement. Competitors include SpaceX Falcon 9, United Launch Alliance Vulcan, and Japan's H3 rocket.
