Quick Facts
About Algerian Space Agency
ASAL (Agence Spatiale Algérienne) is Algeria's national space agency, founded in 2002 and headquartered in Algiers. The agency is responsible for developing and implementing Algeria's national space program, operating the Alsat series of Earth observation satellites — Alsat-1 (2002, multispectral EO, built with SSTL), Alsat-1B (2016, dual camera imager), Alsat-2A (2010, sub-meter optical, built with EADS Astrium), and Alsat-2B (2016).
ASAL also has a satellite assembly, integration, and testing center (SATC) in Oran where Alsat-1N and future satellites are being built domestically, representing Algeria's ambition to transition from foreign-built to indigenously manufactured satellites. The agency focuses on Earth observation for agricultural mapping, desertification monitoring, and urban planning, reflecting Algeria's vast desert territory and development needs. Algeria is one of Africa's most active space nations by budget and satellite ownership.
