About ASI Agenzia Spaziale Italiana
The Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, ASI) is Italy's government agency responsible for the national space program, established in 1988 and headquartered in Rome, coordinating Italian participation in international space programs and managing indigenous satellite development — operating as one of Europe's largest national space agencies and a founding ESA member state with annual budget of approximately €700 million.
ASI's flagship operational program is COSMO-SkyMed — a dual-use civil and defense X-band synthetic aperture radar constellation comprising four first-generation satellites and two second-generation (CSG) satellites. CSG-1 and CSG-2, launched in 2019 and 2022, deliver sub-40-centimeter resolution in Spotlight imaging mode, providing all-weather, day-and-night Earth observation for environmental monitoring, agricultural assessment, disaster management, and defense reconnaissance.
Italy is one of the largest national contributors to the International Space Station through ASI: the Columbus science laboratory module, the Cupola seven-windowed observation dome (the ISS's primary Earthview cupola), and the three Multipurpose Logistics Modules (Leonardo, Raffaello, Donatello) that served as pressurized cargo transporters aboard the Space Shuttle. ASI developed the PRISMA hyperspectral Earth observation satellite, manages Italy's pivotal role in the Vega light launch vehicle program through Italian industrial prime Avio, and contributes to ESA planetary science including Mars Express, Venus Express, and ExoMars rover missions. Italy's astronaut corps has produced long-duration ISS expedition crew members including Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti.
