About Astranis Space Technologies

Astranis, founded in 2015 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, designs and manufactures MicroGEO — a compact (~400 kg) geostationary communications satellite platform delivering dedicated broadband internet capacity to individual operators at a price point approximately 10× lower than traditional full-sized GEO satellites, enabling telecommunications companies in underserved or remote markets to acquire their own dedicated orbital capacity rather than leasing shared transponders.

Traditional GEO telecommunications satellites cost $300-500 million and take 5-7 years to procure and deploy, creating an access barrier for smaller operators needing dedicated spectrum and beam coverage. Astranis' MicroGEO satellite achieves approximately 10-20 Gbps total capacity at roughly $50-100 million fully deployed cost with a 3-year manufacturing timeline — making dedicated GEO capacity economics viable for regional operators in markets where shared transponder leasing is unavailable or inadequate.

Astranis's first commercial satellite, Arcturus, was launched for Pacific Dataport in Alaska in March 2023 on a SpaceX Falcon 9, providing dedicated Ku-band broadband capacity to Alaska communities. The satellite experienced technical issues after reaching GEO orbit that limited its operational output, though the company was transparent about addressing the anomaly and committed to remedial launches. ONDA, a follow-on satellite contracted for Peru's Gilat Satellite Networks broadband expansion, continued demonstrating Astranis's commercial traction across the Americas.

Backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) as lead investor with Venrock, Bowery Capital, and others, Astranis has raised over $350 million in total financing to fund satellite manufacturing scale-up at its San Francisco facility and to expand its satellite pipeline. The company competes with Boeing, Airbus D&S, Thales Alenia Space, and MDA in the small GEO satellite market, differentiating through dramatically lower cost and faster delivery enabled by miniaturization and software-defined radio.
