Beazley Space

Beazley Space is the dedicated space insurance underwriting unit of Beazley plc (BEA.L), a leading Lloyd's of London specialty insurance group founded in 1986 and listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Beazley operates through Lloyd's syndicates 2623 and 623, writing coverage for the full spectrum of space risk: pre-launch property insurance (covering the satellite from manufacturer delivery through integration), launch risk (covering loss during the launch phase, typically the highest single-event loss exposure), in-orbit property coverage (hull and machinery for operational satellite), and third-party liability insurance required by most national space laws for operators licensed under the UK Outer Space Act 1986 and analogous international regulations.

Beazley Space has underwritten coverage for GEO telecommunications satellites, commercial LEO constellations, launch vehicle operators, and ground station infrastructure. As the smallsat market has grown, Beazley and competitors have developed parametric insurance products scaled to CubeSat and microsatellite missions with lower premiums and simplified underwriting. The broader Lloyd's space market — including Beazley, Global Aerospace, Atrium, and Satellite Risk Solutions — collectively underwrites several hundred million dollars of space premium annually.

Beazley's space team works alongside its cyber, marine, and specialty risk divisions, drawing on underwriting expertise in complex technical systems. The space insurance market faces structural challenges from debris collision risk (uninsurable under standard policies), frequency of launch failures from new-entrant launch providers, and premium pressure as mega-constellation operators self-insure through diversification rather than purchasing per-satellite coverage.
