About Blue Canyon Technologies
Blue Canyon Technologies (BCT) is an American small satellite subsystem and bus manufacturer founded in 2008 and headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, producing high-performance attitude determination and control systems (ADCS) and complete CubeSat and microsatellite bus platforms for NASA, DARPA, NRO, and commercial customers — with 80+ satellites launched using BCT hardware, establishing it as the leading commercial ADCS supplier for the US government small satellite market.
BCT's flagship product is the XACT (eXact Attitude Control Technology) series of integrated ADCS modules — self-contained attitude control units combining a star tracker, reaction wheels, magnetorquers, and control electronics in a single package achieving 0.002-degree (7.2 arc-second) RMS pointing accuracy. The XACT's high pointing precision enabled science missions previously impossible on CubeSat platforms: NASA's ASTERIA CubeSat used XACT-based pointing to demonstrate precision photometry capable of detecting exoplanet transits from a 6U CubeSat — a result that established CubeSats as viable scientific platforms for precision astrophysics.
BCT also produces the FlexCore microsatellite bus (12U to ESPA-class, 10-150 kg) and standalone reaction wheels and control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) for satellites requiring higher slew agility than reaction wheels alone provide. All BCT hardware achieves Technology Readiness Level 9 (TRL9) through extensive orbital flight heritage, enabling rapid procurement for flight programs without the multi-year qualification campaigns required for new hardware.
BCT was acquired by Raytheon Technologies (now RTX) in 2021, providing manufacturing scale and defense program access while BCT continued operating independently serving both government and commercial customers.
