Blue Skies Space

Blue Skies Space is a London, UK-based satellite astronomy company founded in 2014, providing astronomical observatory time and data as a service through a dedicated fleet of small satellites purpose-built for ultraviolet and visible-wavelength stellar spectroscopy. The company targets the astronomy community — universities, research institutes, and individual scientists — that lacks affordable access to space-based UV astronomy assets, which are far scarcer than the abundant ground-based and space infrared/optical telescope time available through ESA, NASA, and national observatory programs.

Ultraviolet astronomy is fundamentally a space-only discipline: Earth's atmosphere absorbs UV wavelengths below approximately 300 nm, making ground-based observatories blind to a critical window of stellar emission. UV spectroscopy reveals stellar temperatures, hot plasma dynamics, stellar winds, chromospheric activity, exoplanet atmospheric composition (through transit spectroscopy), and the interstellar medium in ways that optical spectroscopy cannot. Professional UV observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope and ESA's XMM-Newton are massively oversubscribed — proposal acceptance rates below 20% — leaving many scientifically meritorious programs unfunded for years.

Blue Skies Space's flagship satellite Mauve (launched 2023) is a dedicated small spectroscopy satellite carrying a near-ultraviolet (NUV) and optical spectroscopy instrument capable of acquiring spectra of stellar sources with sufficient SNR for scientific publication. Mauve targets stars hosting known exoplanets (characterizing the UV radiation environment that shapes exoplanet atmospheric evolution), active stars (monitoring chromospheric variability), and hot massive stars (mapping their stellar wind dynamics).

Observatory time on Mauve is sold to astronomical institutions on a subscription or per-observation basis — the data-as-a-service model that eliminates the capital cost barrier of building or proposing for dedicated mission access.

Blue Skies Space competes with opportunities on the NASA Hubble and planned UVEX missions, ESA XMM-Newton, and the emerging commercial space telescope market including Hubble-heritage opportunities through STScI's Director's Discretionary programs, offering faster access and more flexible scheduling than traditional competed observatory time.
