About Breakthrough Initiatives

Breakthrough Initiatives is a Palo Alto-based science program funded by Israeli-Russian billionaire Yuri Milner and his wife Julia Milner, established in 2015 to answer fundamental questions about life in the universe at a scale that no academic institution could sustain. The organization runs three primary programs: Breakthrough Listen, the largest-ever SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program with $100M committed over 10 years to survey 1 million stars and 100 galaxies using the Green Bank Telescope, Parkes Observatory in Australia, and the MeerKAT array in South Africa; Breakthrough Starshot, a $100M research and engineering program to develop gram-scale laser-propelled lightsail spacecraft capable of reaching Alpha Centauri at 20% the speed of light in 20 years — requiring a ground-based laser array of unprecedented power; and Breakthrough Watch, which funds development of next-generation optical VLBI instrumentation to directly image potentially habitable exoplanets in nearby star systems. A fourth program, Breakthrough Message, addressed the ethical questions around whether and how to reply to any detected extraterrestrial signal. Milner's involvement brought Stephen Hawking as a public figurehead for Starshot until Hawking's death in 2018. The initiative has produced peer-reviewed publications on fast radio bursts (FRBs), 'Oumuamua, and technosignature detection methodology, injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into radio astronomy infrastructure. Breakthrough Initiatives sits at the intersection of private philanthropy and big-science astrophysics, following the model of the Breakthrough Prize ($3M annual science prizes) as tools for elevating scientific ambition.
