About Indonesian Space Agency

BRIN (Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional / National Research and Innovation Agency) is Indonesia's consolidated national research body that absorbed LAPAN (the national space agency) in 2021. Indonesia's space activities under BRIN/LAPAN include the LAPAN-A series of microsatellites (LAPAN-A1, A2, A3 for EO and AIS ship tracking), development of a small launch vehicle (RX-450 rocket research program), and operation of ground stations. Indonesia has strategic value for equatorial orbit launches: sites at Biak (Papua) and Morotai at 0-2°N latitude offer near-equatorial trajectories that provide maximum performance for geostationary missions. Indonesia's growing space ambitions are driven by the practical needs of the world's largest archipelago nation (17,000 islands) where satellite communications are essential infrastructure for connecting remote communities.
