Calian SED

Calian SED (Systems Engineering Division) is the satellite ground systems and electronic systems division of Calian Group (TSX: CGY), a Saskatoon-Saskatchewan-based Canadian technology and services company, specializing in satellite antenna systems, ground station infrastructure, and communication system integration for commercial, government, and defense customers globally.

SED Systems was founded in 1965 as a University of Saskatchewan spinout before becoming part of Calian, and has built deep expertise in satellite tracking antenna systems — mechanically steerable reflector antennas ranging from 2 m to 13 m diameter for satellite TT&C (telemetry, tracking, and command), Earth observation data downlink, and broadband communications. SED's antenna systems are installed at satellite ground stations worldwide, including major satellite operators' teleports, government satellite control facilities, and polar ground stations for LEO imaging constellation downlink.

The company designs the full ground station stack: antenna reflector and pedestal mechanics, tracking receivers and servo controllers, RF uplink/downlink chains, and ground station control software — providing a complete ground system from a single supplier. Calian SED has supplied ground systems to Canadian Space Agency programs, to international satellite operators who need precision tracking capability, and to defense customers requiring man-portable and vehicle-mounted SATCOM systems.

The company also manufactures small flyaway and motorized satellite terminals for emergency communications, broadcast, and military applications. Saskatoon's location in Saskatchewan, Canada's agricultural heartland, has also positioned Calian SED as a supplier of agricultural remote sensing ground stations that receive Copernicus Sentinel and Landsat data for Canadian crop monitoring. Calian SED competes with ViaSat Antenna Systems, General Dynamics Satcom, and Vertex Antennentechnik (Germany) in satellite ground antenna systems.
