GALCIT's most consequential historical contribution is the institutional founding of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). In the 1930s, a group of Caltech graduate students and researchers including Frank Malina, Jack Parsons, and Edward Forman — informally dubbed the "Suicide Squad" for their dangerous early propellant experiments in the Arroyo Seco behind campus — developed JATO (Jet-Assisted TakeOff) rockets for the US Army Air Corps, establishing the lineage that evolved into JPL, now NASA's primary center for planetary science and robotic exploration missions. JPL is still technically managed by Caltech under contract with NASA.

Modern GALCIT research spans compressible aerodynamics and hypersonic flight, combustion and propulsion, structural dynamics, bio-inspired flight mechanics, and space systems engineering.
