Caltech Space Challenge

The Caltech Space Challenge is a Pasadena, California student-organized design competition hosted by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and co-located with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), held biennially since 2011. Each iteration assembles approximately 32 elite students from top universities worldwide (MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, ETH Zürich, and others) in two competing teams that must design a complete space mission — from concept through architecture, subsystems, mission analysis, and cost estimates — in five days, guided by Caltech/JPL professional mentors.

Past challenge themes have included lunar resource extraction missions, Mars sample return architectures, asteroid prospecting missions, and deep space propulsion concepts. The intensive compressed timeline mirrors the structure of a real concurrent design facility (CDF) session, giving participants realistic experience with systems engineering tradeoffs under time pressure. Caltech's proximity to JPL — whose scientists and engineers serve as mentors — and its strength in planetary science, orbital mechanics, and space instrumentation make it a uniquely credible venue for such a competition.

The Caltech Space Challenge has become one of the most prestigious space design competitions globally, with alumni going on to positions at SpaceX, NASA, ESA, and leading aerospace companies.
