Cemvita Factory

Cemvita (formerly Cemvita Factory) is a Houston, Texas-based synthetic biology company founded in 2017 that engineers microorganisms to convert available raw materials — particularly carbon dioxide (CO2) — into useful products including fuels, chemical feedstocks, food proteins, and construction materials.

The company's space resource utilization vision applies synthetic biology to in-situ resource utilization (ISRU): on Mars, where the atmosphere is 95% CO2, engineered microbes could theoretically convert atmospheric CO2 and water ice into methane rocket propellant (enabling Mars-Earth return), ethanol, food nutrients, and building materials without launching these from Earth. The metabolic engineering approach builds on biology's 4-billion-year optimization of chemical conversion pathways, potentially creating more energy-efficient processes than purely chemical approaches.

NASA has funded Cemvita for ISRU research relevant to lunar and Mars mission architecture. Earth applications are equally significant: CO2-to-fuel conversion addresses climate change (capturing atmospheric carbon while producing usable energy), and Cemvita has industrial partnerships for carbon utilization in petrochemical facilities. The company operates in Houston's energy sector hub, with access to the CO2-rich industrial emissions from petrochemical plants as feedstock for demonstrating their microbial conversion processes at scale before adapting them for space environments.
