Cité de l'espace

Cité de l'espace (City of Space), located in Toulouse, France and opened in 1997, is Europe's premier space-themed science and discovery center — a unique cultural and educational institution situated at the heart of Europe's space capital, where Airbus Defence and Space, Thales Alenia Space, CNES (Centre National d'Études Spatiales), and dozens of space technology companies are headquartered — bringing space exploration, astronomy, and space science to the general public through immersive exhibits, full-scale spacecraft replicas, and an expansive outdoor space environment.

The Cité de l'espace's most iconic outdoor feature is a life-size Ariane 5 rocket — the complete 53-meter vehicle standing vertically as visitors approach the center — providing a visceral sense of scale that no photograph or model can convey. Other outdoor structures include a full-scale replica of the Mir space station exterior and a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft/launch vehicle model. Inside, the Observatoire dome houses a state-of-the-art planetarium with digital projection for astronomical shows, while the 4D cinema system presents space mission films with motion platform seats.

The permanent exhibition covers human spaceflight history (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Shuttle, ISS), the solar system and universe (scale models, interactive orreries, Mars terrain simulations), satellite technology and applications, and astronomical observation techniques. Interactive zones allow visitors to simulate zero-gravity movement, lunar surface gravity (1/6 G), and experience the physiological preparation astronauts undergo. Temporary exhibitions regularly feature collaboration with CNES, ESA, and Airbus on current and future mission hardware.

With approximately 280,000 visitors annually (pre-COVID), Cité de l'espace is one of France's most-visited science museums outside Paris. Its location in Toulouse — home to 20,000+ space industry employees — gives it unique access to active spacecraft engineers and astronauts for educational programming, and the museum plays a significant role in the Toulouse aerospace community's public engagement and STEM career inspiration mission.
