About CODALTEC

CODALTEC (Corporación de Alta Tecnología para la Defensa) is a Colombian nonprofit research and development corporation focused on advanced technology for national defense and security applications, with a central mission of building Colombia's indigenous satellite manufacturing and space technology capabilities. Headquartered in Colombia, CODALTEC operates under the supervision of the Colombian Ministry of National Defense and the Colombian Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Colombiana, FAC), functioning as a civil-military technology development entity rather than a purely commercial or purely government organization.

CODALTEC's flagship space program is its involvement in the FACSAT satellite program — Colombia's first national satellite initiative. FACSAT-1, a 10 kg CubeSat, was Colombia's first satellite, launched aboard a Soyuz-2.1b rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in 2019 as part of an educational and technology demonstration program in partnership with the Israeli company ImageSat International. The experience built Colombian satellite engineering capacity within FAC and CODALTEC.

The follow-on FACSAT-3 constellation represents a more ambitious program — multiple small satellites providing Colombia-operated Earth observation capability for national interests including monitoring of coca cultivation areas, deforestation in the Amazon and Pacific regions, natural disaster assessment across Colombia's highly varied terrain (Andes highlands, Caribbean coast, Amazon basin, Pacific coast), and border surveillance. Colombia's geography — spanning both coasts, high-altitude Andean mountains, and equatorial Amazon — creates strong domestic demand for frequent EO coverage that international commercial imagery services address inadequately for classified or time-sensitive government requirements.

CODALTEC's broader mandate extends to radar systems, cybersecurity, defense electronics, and unmanned systems for the Colombian armed forces. Its satellite work connects to Colombia's emerging participation in the Latin American space sector alongside CONAE (Argentina) and AEB (Brazil), and its membership in the UNOOSA/COPUOS framework. CODALTEC collaborates with Colombian universities and technical institutes to build the human capital pipeline for domestic space technology development.
