About Coherent Navigation

Coherent Navigation was a San Mateo, California startup founded in 2008 that pioneered the use of Iridium satellite signals for precise positioning — an approach called Iridium GNSS or LEO-based navigation. Traditional GNSS (GPS, GLONASS) uses medium Earth orbit satellites whose weak signals are vulnerable to spoofing and multipath in urban environments. Coherent Navigation demonstrated that Iridium's stronger, faster-moving LEO signals could provide cm-level positioning with much faster convergence and better jamming resistance. Apple acquired Coherent Navigation in 2015, reportedly to enhance iPhone positioning capabilities and develop future emergency satellite communication services — technology that eventually contributed to Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite (iPhone 14, 2022) and Precision Finding features. The acquisition represents an early recognition that LEO constellations would fundamentally change positioning.
