About Peruvian Space Agency

CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) is Peru's national space agency, founded in 1974 and headquartered in Lima. Peru's flagship space asset is PeruSat-1, a 400 kg optical Earth observation satellite built by Airbus Defence and Space with 70 cm resolution, launched in 2016 — one of the highest-resolution satellites owned by a Latin American nation. PeruSat-1 provides imagery for land use mapping, deforestation monitoring in the Amazon, agricultural surveys, border surveillance, and disaster response. CONIDA also operates smaller technology satellites (PERUSAT-2 development) and conducts sounding rocket research from its Pucusana launch site. Peru's satellite investment reflects its strategic priorities: monitoring the Amazon basin (second-largest in South America), managing a diverse geography from coast to Andes to jungle, and developing sovereign intelligence capabilities.
