Cosmoleap

Cosmoleap (凌空天行, Lingkong Tianxing) is a Beijing-based Chinese commercial launch vehicle startup founded in 2018 developing liquid-methane/liquid-oxygen (LNG/LOX) powered small-to-medium lift reusable rockets, targeting the rapidly growing Chinese commercial launch market for smallsat constellation operators requiring affordable rideshare and dedicated launch services.

Cosmoleap's development focus on liquid methane propulsion aligns with the global trend toward methane-oxygen propulsion (SpaceX Raptor/Starship, Rocket Lab Neutron, ABL RS1 use similar propellant combinations) for reusable vehicles: methane burns cleaner than RP-1 kerosene, deposits less soot in engine turbopumps and chamber walls between flights (improving reusability economics), has higher specific impulse than kerosene, and can potentially be produced via in-situ resource utilization on Mars from atmospheric CO2 and subsurface ice.

For reusable rockets, reducing post-flight inspection and engine refurbishment costs between flights is critical to making reusability economically transformative rather than merely technically demonstrable.

The Chinese commercial launch market has grown dramatically since 2018, with the government's opening of commercial space launch licensing creating a competitive ecosystem of startups — LandSpace (Zhuque-2, the world's first orbital methane rocket, reached orbit December 2023), Space Pioneer (Tianlong-2, first Chinese private RP-1/LOX rocket to orbit), Galactic Energy (Ceres-1 solid-fuel rocket), and iSpace — all competing to serve Chinese commercial satellite operators building LEO constellations for internet connectivity, Earth observation, and IoT. Cosmoleap competes in this crowded domestic market while targeting international rideshare customers seeking alternatives to Western launch providers.

The company's propulsive landing reusability ambitions follow the SpaceX Falcon 9 first-stage recovery model, with boostback burns and grid fin guidance for controlled descent to a landing pad. Chinese regulations on landing zone approvals and the development of offshore drone ships (similar to SpaceX's drone ships) represent logistical challenges for the reusability program.
