CSA

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA / Agence spatiale canadienne), established in 1989 and headquartered in Longueuil, Quebec (adjacent to Montreal), is Canada's national space agency responsible for developing Canadian space capability, coordinating federal space activities, managing international space partnerships, and advancing Canadian industry's participation in the global space economy.

CSA's most internationally recognized contribution to human spaceflight is the Canadarm robotic system family — a 15-meter robotic arm installed on NASA Space Shuttle orbiters that was essential for satellite deployment, repair, and payload handling from 1981-2011. The successor Canadarm2 has been permanently installed on the International Space Station since 2001, providing station assembly assistance, spacecraft berthing (capturing cargo vehicles for docking), and spacewalk support. Mobile Servicing System (MSS) components including Dextre (the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator) provide fine manipulation capability for external station maintenance. This robotics heritage is CSA's signature contribution to ISS operations and gives Canada an outsized role in human spaceflight relative to its space budget.

CSA's Earth observation program includes RADARSAT-1 (1995), RADARSAT-2 (2007, still operational), and the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM, 3 satellites launched 2019) — a C-band SAR constellation providing daily Canada coverage for ice monitoring, disaster response, maritime surveillance, and sovereign surveillance missions. RADARSAT-2 and RCM data are used for monitoring Arctic ice extent (critical for Canada's shipping lanes and sovereignty claims), flood mapping, and oil spill detection.

Canadian astronauts have flown extensively on Space Shuttle and ISS missions, with David Saint-Jacques (2018-2019, ISS Expedition 58/59) and Jeremy Hansen flying the Artemis II lunar flyby mission (planned 2024/2025) — the first non-American to fly on a deep space Artemis mission, secured through Canada's Canadarm3 contribution to the Lunar Gateway station.

CSA's annual budget is approximately CAD $500 million, directing Canada's space investments through industrial partnerships with MDA (Canadarm systems, RADARSAT buses), Telesat, Maxar Technologies, and a growing commercial space ecosystem.
