CSEM

CSEM (Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique) is a Swiss applied-research and technology-transfer institute headquartered in Neuchâtel, founded in 1984. Unlike the commercial manufacturers in this directory, CSEM operates as a research institute that develops technology through to prototype and pilot-production stages before licensing or transferring it to industrial partners, a model similar to Germany's Fraunhofer institutes.

Its space and aeronautics group works on micro- and nanotechnology components for satellites, including sensors and precision electronics, and the institute participates in the European Space Agency's Industry Space Days supplier events. A named example of its space work is the BATMAM project, a collaboration with the Swiss space-mechanisms company Almatech (already represented in this directory) to develop a lighter, additively manufactured, multifunctional smart battery-pack frame intended to simplify integration and shorten manufacturing lead times for spacecraft.

CSEM has described its relationship with the European Space Agency's International Space Station programme as collaborative, and the institute positions itself as a bridge between Swiss university research and the country's space and microtechnology industry, alongside commercial suppliers such as Beyond Gravity and Almatech. Because CSEM's work crosses many industries beyond space — including medtech, microsystems and renewable energy — only part of its research output is space-related at any given time, and its role in the space supply chain is as a technology developer and component prototyper rather than a volume manufacturer.
