About Centre Spatial de Liège
Centre Spatial de Liège (CSL), established in 1965 and located at the University of Liège, Belgium, is a world-class space instrumentation research center and ESA-certified space test facility specializing in the design, development, integration, calibration, and environmental testing of precision optical and electro-optical instruments for space science, Earth observation, and astronomy missions.
CSL's FOCAL (FOcal Centre for Alignment of Large-scale optics) test facility complex is among Europe's most capable space instrument calibration infrastructure: vacuum chambers ranging from 1 m³ compact chambers for CubeSat components to 200 m³ large-scale vacuum facilities for full-instrument system testing, operating across the full cryogenic to thermal cycle range from -270°C (4 Kelvin, liquid helium range for cryogenic infrared detectors) to +120°C. This capability range enables testing of infrared spectrometers, optical telescopes, cryogenic focal plane arrays, and complete instrument assemblies under thermal-vacuum conditions simulating the space environment.
CSL's instrument heritage includes major contributions to landmark ESA and NASA missions: GAIA (ESA astrometry mission, launched 2013, mapping 1+ billion stars), Euclid (ESA dark energy survey telescope, launched 2023, mapping large-scale universe structure), Herschel (ESA far-infrared space observatory), and James Webb Space Telescope (NASA/ESA/CSA, launched 2021) — CSL provided cryogenic optical performance testing for MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), one of JWST's four science instruments.
CSL's research capabilities extend beyond testing to instrument design, optics manufacturing supervision, detector characterization, and radiometric calibration — making it a vertically capable instrument development partner for both large ESA mission contributions and smaller commercial satellite payload development. The centre employs approximately 150 scientists, engineers, and technicians and generates revenue through ESA program contracts, bilateral agency partnerships, and commercial instrument development services. CSL competes with DLR's test facilities, OHB's calibration infrastructure, and ESTEC (ESA's technology center in the Netherlands) for large instrument environmental test campaigns.
