CU Boulder's most significant space research institution is the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) — the largest university space research institute in the United States, with over $100 million in annual research funding and a workforce of 800+ scientists, engineers, and students. LASP has built instruments for more than 100 spacecraft including the Hubble Space Telescope (SOLSTICE instrument), MAVEN Mars orbiter (IUVS, EUVM instruments), MMS magnetospheric mission, Europa Clipper, and Parker Solar Probe, spanning planetary science, heliophysics, and Earth observation.

The AES department pioneered CubeSat education through the Student Satellite Program (CSP), producing operational CubeSat missions including the Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment (CSSWE) — a 3U CubeSat launched in 2012 that measured energetic particle precipitation in the Van Allen belts. Faculty research spans orbital mechanics and astrodynamics (with heritage tracing to NASA trajectories), spacecraft design, space weather, remote sensing, and electric propulsion.
