About Czech Space Office
The Czech Space Office (Česká kosmická kancelář) is Prague's national space coordination body founded in 2003, operating as the Czech Republic's primary interface with the European Space Agency (ESA) and international space organizations, facilitating Czech industrial and scientific participation in ESA programs. The Czech Republic became an ESA Associate Member in 2003 and a full ESA Member State in 2008, contributing approximately €20M annually to ESA programs — with Czech companies and research institutes competing to win ESA contracts proportional to that contribution through the Geographic Return principle.
The Czech Space Office manages this GeoReturn process, identifying domestic companies with relevant capabilities, supporting them in preparing ESA proposal bids, and monitoring the balance of contracts returning to Czech entities. Czech space industry strengths include advanced optics and optomechanical systems (Czech companies have supplied precision optics for ESA's GAIA mission, Solar Orbiter SPICE spectrograph, and other science missions), scientific instruments for planetary missions, satellite component manufacturing, and atmospheric modeling software.
Research institutions including Charles University Prague, Czech Technical University (ČVUT), and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics contribute scientific leadership to space science programs. The Czech Space Office also supports Czech participation in EU Copernicus Earth observation programs, including validating Sentinel data for Central European land cover monitoring and supporting Czech agricultural and flood management authorities in adopting satellite data services. The Office promotes StartSpace, a national initiative supporting Czech space startups, and manages the Czech-ESA Business Incubation Centre programme.
The office terminated operations in 2024 and withdrew from the International Astronautical Federation; no successor body for its ESA coordination role has been publicly confirmed.
