Dawn Aerospace NZ is the New Zealand operational entity of Dawn Aerospace, a company founded in 2017 with headquarters split between Christchurch, New Zealand and Delft, Netherlands — conducting spaceplane flight testing and airspace-friendly green propulsion development from New Zealand's aviation-permissive regulatory environment and open airspace.

Dawn Aerospace's flagship vehicle is the Mk-II Aurora, a small, jet-powered suborbital spaceplane designed for daily flight operations at aviation-like cadence — a radical departure from the per-launch-campaign model of traditional sounding rockets. The Aurora is powered by a nitrous oxide / isopropyl alcohol (N2O/IPA) bipropellant rocket engine and takes off and lands horizontally under conventional aviation rules from standard runways, without requiring range clearance procedures that ground rocket launches for days. The target flight profile is parabolic trajectory to ~100 km altitude (Kármán line) carrying small scientific payloads or technology demonstrators, with turnaround times enabling multiple flights per day from the same aircraft-style airstrip.

New Zealand's aviation regulation framework, administered by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) under rules developed partly to accommodate commercial space activity (New Zealand passed the Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Act in 2017), allows experimental aircraft operating permits for suborbital vehicles operating in controlled airspace — something harder to obtain in the United States' FAA regulatory environment for launch sites. Christchurch's wide, low-density airspace and proximity to testing grounds in the Canterbury Plains makes it attractive for Aurora flight test campaigns.

Beyond the spaceplane program, Dawn Aerospace developed and commercialized the Dawn B1 and B20 satellite propulsion modules using the same green N2O / hydrocarbon chemistry — providing in-space propulsion for smallsats and CubeSats without the hazardous storable propellants (hydrazine) that require specialized handling facilities and regulatory controls. These green propulsion systems have been integrated into satellite missions as operational products, providing near-term commercial revenue while the spaceplane program matures.

Competitors in the daily-cadence suborbital market include Virgin Galactic (horizontal takeoff SpaceShipTwo, now retired), Rocket Lab's earlier sounding rocket concepts, and Blue Origin's New Shepard (vertical takeoff). Dawn's horizontal, aircraft-rules approach and green propellant stack represent a distinct technical philosophy.
