Dawn's Mk-II Aurora is an autonomous (uncrewed) suborbital spaceplane approximately 4 meters long, launched horizontally from an aircraft runway, powered by a nitrous oxide/propylene propulsion system. The Mk-II targets 100+ km altitude (Kármán line crossing) for microgravity research payloads, atmospheric science instruments, and space boundary experiments, with recovery via autonomous landing for rapid reuse. Flight testing of the Mk-II began in New Zealand in 2023 with approach-and-landing trials, working toward full rocket-powered ascent and hypersonic re-entry envelope expansion. The longer-term Mk-III concept targets orbital capability with a recoverable first stage and expendable upper stage.

Dawn's satellite propulsion division manufactures green monopropellant thruster systems using hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN)-based propellants — non-toxic, non-carcinogenic propellants with density impulse superior to hydrazine for small satellite applications. These thrusters are sold to satellite bus manufacturers and constellation operators as drop-in replacements for hydrazine monopropellant systems, avoiding the extensive ground safety equipment and handling procedures hydrazine requires.

Dawn's New Zealand base leverages RocketLab's regulatory precedent for commercial launches from NZ airspace, the country's Southern Hemisphere orbital trajectory advantage, and a growing local aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. The company competes with Hermeus, Reaction Engines, and Virgin Galactic in reusable spaceplane development, and with Bradford ECAPS, Aerojet Rocketdyne, and Benchmark Space Systems in green smallsat propulsion.
