About Effective Space Solutions

Effective Space Solutions was a Tel Aviv-area Israeli space startup founded in 2013 by Arie Halsband — a veteran of Israeli satellite company Orbit — that developed the SPACE DRONE concept: a compact (~400 kg) autonomous spacecraft designed to dock with and life-extend operational geostationary satellites reaching end-of-fuel without hardware modifications to the client satellite.

The SPACE DRONE architecture exploited a standard interface present on most GEO satellites: the apogee kick motor nozzle opening, accessible for a docking probe. Once attached, the SPACE DRONE's own electric propulsion system (Hall-effect thrusters) would assume stationkeeping and orbit-raising functions, effectively extending the host satellite's operational life by 10-15 years. The economics were compelling: a new GEO satellite costs $300-500M with a 15-month manufacturing lead time; satellite servicing at a fraction of that cost could preserve revenues from premium orbital slots and transponder contracts. Early letters of intent from regional operators validated commercial demand.

In January 2020, Effective Space Solutions was acquired by Astroscale, the Japanese space sustainability company. The acquisition brought Israeli spacecraft GNC and autonomous rendezvous expertise into Astroscale's global orbit, with the Israeli team rebranded as Astroscale IL and tasked with developing ELSA-M (End-of-Life Services by Astroscale – Multiple) — a GEO servicing vehicle capable of sequentially deorbiting multiple satellites on a single mission for constellation operators. The Israeli proximity operations and docking heritage directly underpins Astroscale's commercial servicing roadmap.

The GEO satellite servicing market Effective Space targeted was simultaneously validated when Northrop Grumman's Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV-1) successfully docked with Intelsat 901 in February 2020 — the first commercial satellite servicing operation — proving the concept that Effective Space had been developing. This milestone reinforced the strategic value Astroscale gained through the acquisition.
