About Egyptian Space Agency
The Egyptian Space Agency (EGSA), established by Presidential Decree in 2018 and headquartered in Cairo, is Egypt's national space agency responsible for developing and implementing Egypt's space strategy — including satellite development, operation, and applications; the development of a domestic space industry; and Egypt's representation in international space forums including the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and the African space programs ecosystem.
Egypt's space activity predates EGSA: Egypt launched its first Earth observation satellite, EgyptSat-1, in 2007 aboard a Ukrainian Dnepr rocket from Baikonur — a small 170 kg satellite built under a technology transfer agreement with Russia's Yuzhnoye Design Bureau. EgyptSat-2 followed in 2014, built in Egypt at the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS) with substantially greater domestic involvement, providing 1-meter panchromatic resolution Earth observation imagery for mapping, disaster monitoring, and urban planning.
NARSS (founded 1971) remains a key operational partner of EGSA, managing Egypt's ground receiving stations and Earth observation data processing for agricultural monitoring along the Nile Delta, flood and drought mapping, archaeological site identification, and coastal change monitoring along Egypt's Mediterranean and Red Sea coastlines. Egypt's geopolitical position — at the intersection of Africa, the Middle East, and Europe — and its active satellite applications programs in these domains make it one of Africa's most significant space-using nations alongside South Africa, Nigeria, and Morocco.
EGSA's strategic plan focuses on developing Egyptian satellite manufacturing capability, expanding from integrating foreign-supplied satellite buses to indigenous design of small and medium satellites. Egypt also pursues human spaceflight participation — Egyptian astronaut candidates have been identified — and is developing a national space policy that positions Egypt as a hub for African space cooperation under the African Union Space Policy framework.
