Quick Facts
About EOS GmbH
EOS GmbH (Electro Optical Systems) is a Krailling/Munich-based German company founded in 1989 by Dr. Hans Langer that pioneered and now leads the global market for industrial metal and polymer additive manufacturing (3D printing) systems — with particular significance for the aerospace and space industries where its laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology enables the production of complex flight-grade components previously impossible or prohibitively expensive to manufacture conventionally.
EOS's core technology is Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) / LPBF: one or more high-power fiber lasers selectively melt successive 20-80μm layers of metal powder — titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V), Inconel 718/625 nickel superalloys, AlSi10Mg aluminum, maraging steels, CoCr alloys, and 30+ other materials — building complex three-dimensional parts layer by layer with internal features, undercuts, and topology-optimized lattice geometries that cannot be machined from billet or cast.
Space industry applications are extensive. ArianeGroup uses EOS machines to manufacture Prometheus engine components — the reusable European cryogenic engine targeting 10× cost reduction vs Vulcan Engine — where printed Inconel nozzle extensions and thrust chamber walls enable complex regenerative cooling channels. Airbus prints titanium satellite structural brackets and antenna mounts at 40-60% mass reduction vs machined equivalents. VAST (US orbital platform startup) uses EOS-printed titanium structural hardware. Gilmour Space Technologies (Australia) partnered with EOS for printed components in its Eris orbital launch vehicle. SpaceX, Rocket Lab, and many launch startups print propulsion components on EOS or competing LPBF platforms.
EOS offers 75+ qualified material-process parameter sets — crucial for aerospace buyers who need certified, reproducible mechanical properties (tensile strength, fatigue life, fracture toughness) rather than arbitrary print parameters. EOS's flagship systems include the M 290 (400W single-laser, most widely deployed globally) and the M 400-4 (quad-laser industrial production platform for high-throughput part manufacturing). With over $500M in annual revenue, EOS competes with Trumpf TruPrint, GE Additive (Concept Laser), Nikon SLM Solutions, and Velo3D (US, aerospace-specialized LPBF with no-support printing capability).
