Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA), founded in 2018 and headquartered in Darwin, Northern Territory, operates the Arnhem Space Centre located on the Arnhem Land Indigenous land in Australia's far north — a remote equatorial launch site at approximately 12°S latitude with Pacific Ocean downrange access that is commercially unique: the only privately owned and operated multi-user equatorial orbital launch facility in the world.

The equatorial location provides the maximum possible advantage from Earth's rotational velocity: at 12°S latitude, the launch site benefits from ~460 m/s of eastward velocity provided by Earth's rotation, which counts directly toward the ~7,800 m/s needed for LEO insertion — reducing the delta-V a rocket must provide and increasing payload capacity to equatorial LEO orbits compared to higher-latitude launch sites. This advantage is most valuable for GEO satellite launches (optimal from equatorial inclinations) and equatorial-plane LEO constellations for global broadband coverage.

ELA signed agreements with NASA to use the Arnhem Space Centre for sub-orbital sounding rocket launches in 2022 — NASA's first launches from commercial ranges on Australian soil and the first time NASA launched from Australia since the Woomera program. The 2022 campaign demonstrated the spaceport's operational readiness, range safety infrastructure, and coordination with Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian Space Agency, establishing the regulatory precedent for future NASA and commercial orbital missions.

ELA's 8 planned orbital launch complex pads are designed to accommodate diverse launch vehicle configurations from different customers, enabling a multi-manifest commercial launch range model analogous to Cape Canaveral's multiple launch complex operators. The Arnhem Land location required novel environmental approvals and Indigenous land use agreements with the Northern Land Council, reflecting Australia's requirement to balance commercial space development with Indigenous heritage protection. ELA competes internationally with ESA's Kourou (French Guiana, 5°N) for equatorial commercial launches.
