About Esrange Space Center
Esrange Space Center, located near Kiruna in Swedish Lapland at approximately 68°N — 200 km north of the Arctic Circle — is one of the world's premier high-latitude space research and operations facilities, operated by SSC (Swedish Space Corporation) since its founding in 1966. Esrange serves as Europe's only orbital launch site on continental European/Scandinavian soil (excluding Russia's Plesetsk), conducts the world's most active stratospheric balloon launch program, and is one of the world's busiest sounding rocket ranges.
Established originally as a rocket research range for atmospheric science, Esrange has conducted over 600 sounding rocket launches for ESA, NASA, DLR (German Space Center), Swedish National Space Agency (SNSA), and university research programs studying auroral physics, atmospheric chemistry, microgravity material science, and cosmic ray detection. The site's sub-Arctic location provides direct access to auroral zones for ionospheric and magnetospheric research, with near-zero radio frequency interference from sparse local population.
Esrange's scientific balloon program is the world's largest, launching 30-50 high-altitude polyethylene balloons annually to 30-40 km altitude for payloads up to 3,000 kg — including NASA's Super-Pressure Balloon program for long-duration stratospheric research, ESA astrophysics instruments, and atmospheric science experiments. Balloon flights drift eastward across Scandinavia and Russia, with payload recovery operations coordinated across northern territories.
In 2022, Esrange became Sweden's first orbital launch site when Swedish small launch startup MILA Space (now with SSC) began orbital launch infrastructure development. SSC has invested heavily in ground station upgrades at Esrange — adding satellite tracking antennas and satellite data relay infrastructure — making Esrange a key node in SSC's global ground station network serving commercial LEO satellite operators needing high-latitude passes for polar-orbit data downlinks.
