Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute

The Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI) is Ethiopia's national space science organization, headquartered in Addis Ababa and established in 2016 — serving as the institutional home for Ethiopia's space program, science education initiatives, and technology development in a country that has positioned space capabilities as a strategic priority for economic development and regional leadership across the Horn of Africa.

Ethiopia's most significant space milestone is the ETRSS-1 (Ethiopian Remote Sensing Satellite-1), the country's first satellite, launched from China's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in December 2019 aboard a Long March 4B rocket. ETRSS-1 is a 70-kg microsatellite built in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Space Technology (CAST) under a knowledge transfer agreement that involved training Ethiopian engineers at CAST facilities in Beijing — a model used by China to build technical capacity in African partner nations while expanding Chinese space influence on the continent.

ETRSS-1 carries a multispectral camera for Earth observation, with applications including agricultural monitoring (critical for a country where agriculture employs 85% of the population and drought monitoring is a national food security priority), forest cover change detection, urban mapping, and emergency management.

ESSTI's education mandate is central to its mission: the institute runs space science undergraduate and graduate programs at Entoto Observatory and Research Center (on the hill overlooking Addis Ababa, home to the largest optical telescope on the African continent), trains Ethiopian engineers and scientists in remote sensing, satellite operations, and space technology, and coordinates Ethiopia's participation in international space science programs through the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and African Union initiatives.

Ethiopia's engagement with China (the ETRSS-1 partnership) reflects a broader pattern of Chinese space investment in Africa, where China has supported satellite projects in Nigeria, Algeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, and other countries. The Ethiopian government has indicated ambitions for additional satellites and expanded space capabilities as part of its national development agenda, with ESSTI serving as the coordinating institution for these longer-term programs.
