About EXA
EXA (Agencia Espacial Civil Ecuatoriana — Ecuadorian Civilian Space Agency) is a unique organization in Latin American space history: a non-governmental, civilian-run space agency founded in Ecuador — the first institution of its kind in Latin America to style itself as a space agency operating outside direct government control — focused on satellite technology development, microgravity research, and producing ITAR-free spacecraft components accessible to developing nations.
EXA's most notable achievement is the development and launch of NEE-01 Pegaso — Ecuador's first satellite, launched in April 2013 aboard a Chinese Long March 2D rocket. NEE-01 was a 1.2 kg cubesat developed by EXA that transmitted the first live video from a satellite to South America, generating significant national pride in Ecuador's first indigenous space capability. A second satellite, NEE-02 Krysaor, followed in November 2013 aboard the same launch vehicle. Both satellites were built with components assembled in Ecuador, representing a genuine domestic satellite manufacturing capability despite Ecuador's limited technical infrastructure.
EXA developed Latin America's first dedicated zero-gravity research aircraft — a modified plane flying parabolic arcs to create 20-30 second intervals of microgravity — making parabolic flight microgravity research accessible within Latin America without expensive trips to NASA's parabolic aircraft program. This aircraft has been used for biological research, fluid dynamics experiments, and medical studies by Ecuadorian and regional universities.
The organization produces ITAR-free (International Traffic in Arms Regulations-free) spacecraft components including power control units, electrical power systems (EPS), and solar cell assemblies that developing nations can purchase without navigating U.S. export control restrictions that apply to most commercial space hardware. This ITAR-free positioning specifically serves African, Asian, and Latin American countries that lack the political relationships or regulatory infrastructure to obtain export licenses for U.S.-origin space components.
