Exail

Exail is a French advanced technology group formed in 2022 through the merger of iXblue and ECA Group, headquartered in Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris, providing inertial navigation systems, photonics-based space components, and maritime robotics for defense, space, and offshore industries.

The iXblue heritage — tracing to a spinout of Thomson-CSF photonics research — established the company as a leading European supplier of fiber-optic gyroscopes (FOGs) for spacecraft attitude control and inertial navigation. iXblue's Astrix family of star trackers and STELLAR inertial measurement units (IMUs) are space-qualified and fly aboard Earth observation satellites, telecommunications satellites, and science missions requiring precise attitude knowledge and pointing stability. Fiber-optic gyroscopes offer advantages over mechanical gyros in reliability and vibration tolerance for certain satellite applications, avoiding the moving parts that constrain lifetime in the space environment.

The ECA Group heritage contributes maritime robotics and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and unmanned surface vehicles — capabilities increasingly intersecting with offshore energy infrastructure inspection and naval mine countermeasure missions.

Within the space domain, Exail's navigation sensors serve satellite bus attitude control (maintaining camera, antenna, and solar array pointing) and precision science mission requirements (telescope pointing stability to arc-second accuracy). The company competes with Honeywell Aerospace, Northrop Grumman LITEF, and Safran Electronics for inertial navigation contracts from European satellite manufacturers including Airbus Defence & Space, Thales Alenia Space, and OHB.
