Firehawk Aerospace is a Dallas-area hybrid rocket motor developer founded in 2019, combining additive manufacturing with hybrid propulsion to produce motors that are safer to handle, cheaper to produce, and more throttleable than solid rocket motors. Their proprietary 3D-Ultra printing process fabricates solid fuel grains — typically HTPB-based compounds — in complex internal geometries that optimize combustion efficiency and regression rate, achieving thrust profiles not possible with conventionally cast solid fuels.

Firehawk's core technology is dual-use: hybrid motors power both tactical missiles (replacing legacy solid-fueled GMLRS-class munitions) and small launch vehicles, with the defense application funding the technology development that benefits the commercial space access market. A publicly disclosed GMLRS-class flight test saw their motor push a test article beyond Mach 1 at 18,000 feet, validating the propulsion system for tactical applications. On the commercial side, Firehawk is developing a family of hybrid motors scaled from small sounding rockets to small-satellite launch vehicle first stages.

The company raised a $60M Series C led by ATL Partners and Shield Capital, reflecting investor confidence in the defense applications of hybrid propulsion. Hybrids offer operational safety advantages over solids (the fuel is inert without oxidizer) and can be throttled and shut down mid-burn — capabilities that improve mission abort options in both launch and missile applications. Firehawk competes with Virgin Orbit's legacy motor designs, Gilmour Space, and Bristol Aerospace in the hybrid propulsion niche.
