The technical challenges FSO systems must solve include atmospheric turbulence (which causes phase distortions and intensity scintillation in beams passing through Earth's atmosphere, reducible through adaptive optics), precise pointing acquisition and tracking (the narrow beam requires arc-second accuracy between transmitter and receiver despite relative motion), and cloud blockage (requiring site diversity — multiple ground stations at geographically separated locations to ensure that at least one has clear sky visibility when others are clouded over).
