About Goonhilly Earth Station

Updated 2026-09-04

Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd. is a Helston, Cornwall, UK-based satellite ground station and deep space communications facility founded in 2009 as a private company — transforming the iconic Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station (a BT-owned facility that handled the first transatlantic satellite television broadcast via Telstar in 1962 and subsequent Apollo lunar mission communications) into a commercial satellite and deep space ground station network.

Goonhilly's flagship capability is its 32-meter Goonhilly 6 (GHY-6) antenna — a large parabolic dish capable of communicating with spacecraft at lunar distances and beyond, making Goonhilly the world's first private deep space communications network when it provided commercial TT&C services for a spacecraft beyond geostationary orbit in 2021. This places Goonhilly in a select group alongside NASA's Deep Space Network (Goldstone, Madrid, Canberra), ESA's ESTRACK (Cebreros, Malargüe, New Norcia), and ISRO's Deep Space Network (Byalalu) as institutions capable of deep space communication — but as the only private commercial operator in this exclusive club.

The GHY-6 antenna's deep space capability makes it commercially attractive for lunar missions seeking redundancy or supplemental contact time beyond what NASA DSN allocation permits. As commercial lunar missions from companies like Intuitive Machines, Astrobotic, ispace, and Draper increase, the demand for commercial deep space TT&C services (at prices more accessible than DSN prime contractor arrangements) represents a growing market. Goonhilly has signed commercial agreements to provide communications for multiple commercial lunar missions.

Beyond deep space, Goonhilly operates a network of over 60 antennas covering S-band, X-band, Ka-band, Ku-band, and C-band for standard GEO TT&C, government satellite operations, satellite broadcasting contribution links, and terrestrial fiber connectivity aggregation at the UK's Cornish coast where multiple transatlantic submarine cable systems terminate — making Goonhilly a converged satellite and fiber connectivity hub.

Goonhilly's heritage and physical infrastructure — the original dish farm is an English Heritage-recognized industrial landmark — provide irreplaceable assets (site-cleared large aperture antenna positions, licensed spectrum rights, established BT fiber connectivity) that would be enormously expensive and time-consuming to replicate from scratch.
