About Guiana Space Centre

The Guiana Space Centre (Centre Spatial Guyanais, CSG), located near Kourou in French Guiana on the northeast coast of South America, is Europe's primary orbital launch facility — operated jointly by ESA, CNES (French space agency), and the French government — providing the ideal geographic location for launching satellites into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) and various low-Earth orbit mission profiles with maximum propellant efficiency.

Kourou's location at approximately 5.2°N latitude (close to the equator) is the key advantage that makes it Europe's premier launch site: satellites launched eastward from Kourou can take full advantage of Earth's rotation velocity (~460 m/s at this latitude), reducing the delta-v required to reach geostationary orbit by approximately 2 km/s compared to higher-latitude launch sites like Cape Canaveral (28.5°N) or Baikonur (46°N). For a GEO communications satellite, this propellant savings translates directly to either a heavier satellite or 2-3 additional years of operational lifetime — a substantial commercial value. Launches south toward polar orbits benefit from the clear ocean downrange corridor and minimal range safety overfly constraints.

The Centre Spatial Guyanais operates multiple launch pads: the ELA-4 (Ensemble de Lancement Ariane 4) pad for Ariane 6 launches, the historic ELA-3 pad that supported Ariane 5 from 1996-2023 (over 100 launches), and the SLV (Site de Lancement Vega) pad for the Vega and Vega-C light launcher serving small satellite customers. A Russian Soyuz launch pad (ELS) operated from 2011-2022 before Russia's suspension following the Ukraine invasion.

Founded in 1968, the CSG has launched over 300 satellites, employs approximately 9,000 people across CSG site operators and major contractors (ArianeGroup, Arianespace, Regulus services company), and is a critical asset for European strategic launch autonomy — the EU's stated policy of maintaining independent access to space without dependence on foreign launch providers.
