Hannover Re Space is the aviation and space reinsurance division of Hannover Rückversicherung AG, the world's third-largest reinsurer by premium volume (after Munich Re and Swiss Re), headquartered in Hannover, Germany, with approximately €25B in annual gross written premium across its reinsurance lines. Hannover Re has written aviation and space business continuously for over 30 years, making it one of the most experienced space reinsurance underwriters globally — providing the financial backstop behind satellite insurance policies written at the primary Lloyd's and direct insurance market level.

Space reinsurance operates differently from direct insurance: when a primary insurer like Beazley, Global Aerospace, or AXA Space writes a policy covering a GEO satellite worth $300-500M, they retain only a portion of that exposure on their own balance sheet and cede the remainder to reinsurers like Hannover Re through treaty reinsurance (proportional shares of a portfolio of risks) and facultative reinsurance (case-by-case capacity for individual large risks).

Hannover Re's participation in the space insurance market provides the loss-absorbing capacity that allows primary insurers to offer coverage limits that would otherwise exceed their own capital base. The company provides both obligatory treaty reinsurance (where Hannover Re automatically accepts shares of all risks in a primary insurer's space portfolio) and facultative reinsurance (negotiated on individual large satellite programs).
