About Hexcel Corporation
Hexcel Corporation (NYSE: HXL) is a Stamford, Connecticut-headquartered advanced composites manufacturer founded in 1948 and the world's leading producer of aerospace-grade carbon fiber prepreg materials and the undisputed global leader in honeycomb core manufacturing — a position that makes it an essential supplier to virtually every major Western launch vehicle, satellite, and aerospace platform across more than 100 space and defense programs.
Hexcel's HexTow carbon fiber family covers the spectrum of aerospace requirements: IM7 (intermediate modulus, 276 GPa, 5.7 GPa tensile strength — the single most widely used aerospace carbon fiber globally, present in the F-35 airframe, Boeing 787, Airbus A350, and numerous space structures); AS4 and AS7 (standard modulus for non-critical structural applications); and IM2/IM8/IM10 (progressively higher performance for highly loaded structures).
These fibers are woven into fabrics or formed into unidirectional tape before being pre-impregnated with HexPly resin systems — epoxy, bismaleimide (BMI), or cyanate ester — to produce HexPly prepreg, the ready-to-layup material that composite part fabricators cure in autoclaves or by out-of-autoclave (OOA) methods.
Hexcel's second major product line — and its most defensible market position — is aerospace honeycomb: HexWeb aluminum honeycomb panels (and Nomex aramid honeycomb for fire-resistant applications) provide the rigid sandwich core for satellite structural panels, spacecraft decks, launch vehicle fairings, control surfaces, and solar array substrates. Honeycomb sandwich achieves stiffness-to-mass ratios 10-50× greater than solid aluminum panels of equivalent area — making it the standard structural approach for any flat or moderately curved spacecraft surface where mass efficiency is paramount.
Space applications span the complete program portfolio: Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur composite payload fairings; Ariane 5 and Ariane 6 composite interstage and fairing structures (via Hexcel/Safran joint ventures in Europe); SLS composite structures and Orion service module panels; ISS integrated truss segment composites; GEO and LEO satellite bus structural panels; and solar array substrate backing structures requiring near-zero coefficient of thermal expansion.
With approximately $1.6 billion in annual revenue and EBITDA margins exceeding 20%, Hexcel competes primarily with Toray Composite Materials America (Tacoma WA) for prepreg sales and with Euro-Composites (Luxembourg) for honeycomb, while holding a commanding position in both markets.
