About Harbin Institute of Technology
Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT, 哈尔滨工业大学) is one of China's C9 league elite research universities, founded in 1920 under Russian influence in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, and consistently ranked among China's top three aerospace and engineering institutions alongside Beihang University and NUDT. HIT's School of Astronautics is among the largest aerospace engineering faculties in the world, training thousands of engineers annually who populate CASC, CASIC, CGWIC, and China's growing commercial space sector.
In space robotics, HIT is a world leader: its research groups developed the dexterous robotic arms for China's Tianhe core module of the Chinese Space Station — the station's primary EVA robotic assistance tool — as well as robotic systems for lunar sample return missions. HIT has independently designed, built, and launched numerous small satellites through its satellite research center, including the ZDPS (Zhejiang-DIANZI Pico Satellite) series and HIT-branded experimental technology demonstrators testing novel propulsion, attitude control, and inter-satellite link concepts.
The university operates extensive thermal vacuum test facilities, vibration testing infrastructure, and in-house fabrication for advanced materials including carbon fiber composite structures. HIT's strong ties to Harbin aircraft engine industry (AVIC Harbin Engine) and the adjacent Songhua River basin industrial cluster give its aerospace graduates a natural transition path. Notable HIT alumni include senior engineers at CASC, China Aerospace Times Electronics, and multiple commercial space startups in the Beijing-Shanghai-Shenzhen space industrial zones. HIT Shenzhen campus has emerged as a second hub focused on commercial space and quantum technologies.
