Honeybee Robotics is a US aerospace robotics company founded in 1983 in New York City (later relocated to Altadena, California) with a 40-year heritage designing and manufacturing robotic sampling systems, planetary drills, mechanisms, and end effectors for NASA and commercial planetary exploration missions — acquired by Blue Origin in 2021 to strengthen Blue Origin's planetary surface robotics capabilities for lunar and Mars applications.

Honeybee's signature engineering domain is rock and regolith sampling: the mechanisms that acquire solid material samples from extraterrestrial surfaces for in-situ analysis or Earth return. The company designed and built the Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT) for the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity — a grinding wheel that abraded centimeter-deep circular patches in Martian rocks to expose unweathered surfaces for the APXS spectrometer and Microscopic Imager. For the Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity), Honeybee built the Sample Acquisition, Processing, and Handling (SA/SPaH) system incorporating a rotary-percussive drill, bit carousel, inlet funnel, and powder transport to deliver rock samples to the CheMin and SAM onboard laboratories. The Mars 2020 (Perseverance) rover carries Honeybee's upgraded Adaptive Caching Assembly (ACA) handling system that stores sealed sample tubes for eventual Mars Sample Return retrieval.

Beyond Mars, Honeybee has developed the Planetary Volatiles Extractor (PVEx) — a percussive drill designed to bore into icy regolith at lunar permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) and extract water ice by heating, then capturing vapor for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). The company has also designed mechanisms for asteroid sample collection concepts, comet lander systems, and lunar surface mobility platforms.

Following the Blue Origin acquisition, Honeybee's engineering teams support Blue Origin's lunar lander programs (Blue Moon) and surface robotics development. Competitors in planetary robotics mechanisms include JPL's own mechanism design group, Maxon Motor (Swiss actuator supplier), and Tethers Unlimited's sampling systems. Honeybee's multi-decade NASA flight heritage makes it a preferred source for mission-critical sampling mechanisms.
