Hughes Network Systems is an American satellite broadband technology company founded in 1971 and headquartered in Germantown, Maryland, that invented VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology and built the largest satellite internet service in the Americas — the HughesNet service connecting over one million residential and business subscribers across the United States, Canada, and Latin America.

Hughes invented VSAT technology in the early 1980s — small-aperture dish terminals communicating via geostationary satellite to provide cost-effective data connectivity to locations without terrestrial infrastructure. This technology became the backbone of enterprise satellite networks connecting retail chains, gas stations, and remote branch offices globally, and evolved into the consumer satellite internet services that serve rural subscribers today. Hughes holds hundreds of VSAT-related patents establishing foundational intellectual property in the field.

The company's JUPITER High-Throughput Satellite (HTS) system uses Ka-band spot beams to concentrate satellite capacity over coverage areas, enabling download speeds up to 100 Mbps for subscribers. JUPITER 3 (EchoStar 24), launched by Falcon 9 in July 2023, is among the world's largest and most powerful commercial communications satellites at launch — a 9,200 kg spacecraft in GEO providing over 500 Gbps of total throughput capacity to expand HughesNet service across the Americas.

Hughes operates as a subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation and commands approximately 69% of the US residential satellite internet subscriber market. The company competes with ViaSat (Viasat-3 HTS constellation) and Starlink (SpaceX LEO broadband) as the satellite internet market undergoes a generational shift toward LEO-based low-latency services.
