About i4is

Updated 2026-09-05

The Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is) is a London-based nonprofit scientific research organization founded in 2012 dedicated to studying the science, engineering, and technology required to eventually send spacecraft to other star systems. Growing out of the Project Icarus effort (a conceptual redesign of the British Interplanetary Society's 1970s Project Daedalus fusion starship study), i4is conducts rigorous technical research on advanced propulsion concepts including fusion drives, laser-driven lightsails (the approach pursued by Breakthrough Starshot for Alpha Centauri), antimatter propulsion, and beamed-energy systems.

The organization gained international attention for Project Lyra — a rapid-response astrodynamics study initiated in 2017 analyzing the feasibility of catching and intercepting the interstellar object 'Oumuamua, the first confirmed visitor from another star system, demonstrating that a probe using a solar flyby gravity assist could potentially intercept it within decades. i4is publishes technical studies in peer-reviewed journals and its own forums, organizes symposia, and runs educational programs aimed at inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers to think seriously about interstellar travel as a tractable long-term engineering challenge rather than pure science fiction.
