About Icarus Robotics

Updated 2026-06-30

Icarus Robotics is a Brooklyn, New York startup, based at the Newlab facility in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, developing remote-operated and autonomous free-flying robots for tasks aboard crewed space stations, with longer-term ambitions in debris removal, spacecraft servicing, and lunar and Martian surface operations. Led by CEO and co-founder Ethan Barajas, the company completed a four-flight parabolic microgravity test campaign of its JOY robot in 2026 in Canada, validating manipulation, positioning and flight-control capabilities.

JOY is scheduled to launch to the International Space Station in a 2027 mission flying with Voyager Technologies, where it will perform cargo rearrangement and assist with biological experiments in the same way a NASA astronaut would.
