The department conducts research in aerodynamics, propulsion (including hypersonics and electric propulsion), flight mechanics, spacecraft structures, and avionics. Faculty and students collaborate extensively with ISRO on satellite development, small satellite programs, and specific propulsion subsystem development. IIT Bombay has been a launch customer for student-built nanosatellites deployed via ISRO's PSLV rideshare and JAXA's Kibo deployer.
